KeKeZ (KEKEZHANG) (b.2001, China) received her BA in Digital Media Arts from Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University in 2023, and is currently an MFA student at Columbia University School of the Arts with a concentration in Moving Image. Her work involves video, performance, sculpture and photography.

She prefers to awaken the body’s perception through experience rather than theoretical analysis. Her work focuses on the physiological environment of humans, particularly the expression and rhythm of the body. She often feels that the mind and body are separate entities, leading her to examine herself from different perspectives. She frequently senses someone watching her from a corner, creating a feeling of both fear and anticipation. This sensation makes her feel like a balloon, unable to exert force yet constantly rolling on the ground, dizzy and disoriented. As she keeps looking back, an energy seems about to be released but is quickly restrained.

Having experienced numerous stage performances, she is highly sensitive to the concept of “gaze.” She often perceives herself as an image, with her works engaging in a battle of gazes and power dynamics. She explores how women present and appreciate their bodies in the digital age and how this presentation is influenced by ingrained gender norms. Through her art, she aims to convey the complexities of identity and the impact of societal and cultural norms on the individual.

She presents the contradictions of the body in different states, the collision of the body in various dimensions, and the perception of the environment. Her pieces are frequently multi-media, using subtle details to engage the audience’s senses, akin to the feeling of skin being lightly pricked without finding the source.
